Now I have upgraded two Macs to Snow Leopard. All in all I had no problems, the installation seems to free 35 Gb – unbelievable! Read more details …

There were only a few problems:

When installing on my iMac, I got the message: “OSProductManagerDomain-Fehler 100.” After a few moments of panic I recognized that the DVD drive made lots of noise. So I took out the DVD and cleaned it. Then everything went well.

I roughly tried my favorite applications

1Password – following the advice in http://www.switchersblog.com/2009/06/getting-1password-to-work-on-snow-leopard.html made it work

Jameica – did not work initially. The hint to switch java to 32bit mode did not work either. So I switched to the nightly build as shown in http://hibiscus.berlios.de/doku.php?id=support:macos#seit_dem_update_auf_snow_leopard_macosx_10.6_laesst_sich_jameica_nicht_mehr_starten. Thanks Olaf Wiluhn

myTracks – no problem

Photolinker – no problem

Lightroom – no problem

Drobo dashboard – no problem

Time machine on drobo – no problem

eyeTv – no problem

Video Lan Client with t-home entertain streams – no problem

Reveal – displays exif data but preview image is in wrong colors, and buttons are yellow

Smultron – no problem

skype – no problem

Adium – no problem

Agfa Scanwise – does not recognize the color profile. I guess I need another scanner software. Vuscan works with my scanner but I need to try more. Scan from preview does not work with my Agfa Snapscan 1212u

BasicColor display – it came up but I did not yet perform a calibration -
4.1.12 could not validate the calibration
4.1.15 works fine

Syrinx – no problem

Cyberduck – did not work. I installed the new beta from Cyberduck-3.3b3.zip, did not try the other workaround

Disk Inventory – no problem

Google Earth – did not start initially but after several tries it did (windows mode

Virtual Box – I have only a small one, but his works

Zipeg – no problem

In summary, the upgrade was successful.

Now going to play aoround with it. Doc exposé is great!

Addendum 31.10.2009: have a look at http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ for information about compatibility of software under Snow Leopard.

This weekend saw a big step for geotagging on Mac – I might say for geotagging at all – GPSPhotolinker 2.0 Beta.

Even if I am somewhat enthusiastic on myTracks, GPSPhotolinker is still very good and it will get much better in Version 2.0. Both tools are really great but they narrow the issue from different ends. I really would like to see the combination of both:

GPSPhotolinker has its focus on photos. It provides different methods determining the GPS coordinates which shall be attached to the photos.

myTracks has its focus on Trackmanagement including editing trackpoints. Photos are bound to trackpoints. It does not know about photos without trackpoint. Even if non tagged photos are loaded, they are attached to a trackpoint of a new track.

GPSPhotolinker 2.0 Beta 5 is very stable and also pretty fast, in particular when dealing with RAW images. I wonder how Jeff achieved this. Besides Geotagging, GPSPhotolinker evolves to a good meta data editor as well. It implements the recommendations specified by http://www.metadataworkinggroup.org.

Geoencoding

GPSPhotolinker now has a map (from different sources like OpenStreetMap, VirtualEarth …). The location of the images are shown as pins.

I can drag the photos from Lightroom directly in to GPSPhotolinker. Tracks can also be loaded via drag&drop.

The next screenshot shows the Geocoding console whis is used to geoencode the images.

This image shows the Standard (which was previously called Batch) mode. The parameters can be adujusted as shown below.

The manual mode allows to identify the location of the photo in the center of the map. This is also very good to tweak the results of batch mode.

The single mode allows to automatically geoencode each photo individually. One can see how GPSPhotolinker interpolates between two trackpoints.

There is also a Track manager which allows to select individual tracks which are highlighted on the map.

Handling Metadata

The tool also takes care of metadata. For this it provides a Metadata pane which can be customized by drag & drop. The metadata pane is a bit small and not as compact as the one in Lightroom. But it provides tooltips for each field.

I will see how useful it is for me. Nevertheless, I have to rewrite my Geotagging Userstory.

I tried iPhoto’s face recognition on the mac of a friend. It face recognition looks really promising. I find it an interesting feature in particular for for management of family pictures. But as a pity, iPhoto does not write it back to the images. This means, if one invests in it the data are threatened to get lost if a new image manager comes in to place.

As I use Lightroom, I would really like to see the same function in Lightroom or at least to see an option to transfer the data from iPhoto to Lightroom.

I am just looking for another more elegant method to provide photos directly from Lightroom. I created a test account on smugmug and uploaded the berlin images there.
It appears to me that

smugmug has many many features

pictures can easily be uploaded from lightroom using the plugin by Jeff Friedl’s Export To SmugMug plugin for Lightroom

is reasonably fast

can have public and private libraries

has no limits for number of photos, disk space, size of photos

I will give it a try then see …

I promised to finetune my Lightroom export setting and publish it here. Not that I am really satisfied with it, but as Tim asked for it, I publish the current status.

You need to install Lightroom Transporter.

Here is the Lightroom export preset (use context menu “save target to …”):
kml-export.lrtemplate

Note that this preset also moves camera settings as well as “IPTC Title” and “IPTC Image Description” to the KML-File.

I have to perform the following steps to create a kmz file:

Select the geocoded photos in Lightrom

Make sure that “IPTC Title” and “IPTC Image Description” are filled properly

Export the photos using the preset above, you get a KML file named “summary.kml”

Create a kml-file from the relevant tracks. I manage my tracks in MyTracks which provides an kml export feature.

Open both kml-files in googleMaps, move the track to the temporary location with the photos

Export the temporary location to a KMZ-File.

Known issues:

One has to click twice to an image to show the image in googleMaps properly. I gues this comes from the fact that I increased the size of theimages

I would love get rid of the manual steps

I tried to orgnaize my imaged in multiple Lightroom Catalog files. But this is not really useful since I use the same images in multiple projects. So I decided to give it a try and have moved all in one catalog: 77000 Images starting from 2001 til now. Raw files as well as corresponding derivatives which I had generated by the different workflows I have been using throughout all the years.

It is of reasonable performance but not very fast. The LR database is on the iMac internal harddisk while the images are all on an external WesternDigital myBook. This drive appears to be slow if I work on it with the finder directly.

However it is, I can give the recommendation to handle everything in one and only one LR database.

You can play with the file by clicking here.

Thanks to Timothy Armes who created LR/Transporter. He was very responsive wrt to my enhancement requests such that I could use this to create a KML file for google earth. As of now I have to manually add the track and to zip it. But even this will hopefully getting better soon.

I plan to finetune the export settings somehow and to publish it here.

Hier also mein Beitrag

2. Wie regelmässig machst Du Backups?

Vielen Dank an Apple für Time Machine. Damit habe ich eine stündliche Sicherung. Einfach genial.

3. In welchem Format speicherst Du Deine Fotos?

4. Welche Ordnerstrukturen oder Dateinamen verwendest Du?

Ich habe eine Ordnerstruktur nach Jahr/Monat/Tag+anlass (
~/Fotos/<jjj>/<mm>/<tag>_<anlass>

JJJJ-MM-DD-HHmmss-nnnnnnn
, also Jahr-Monat-Tag-Stunde-minute-Sekunde-Nummer.

Ich gehe also fotografieren.

I recently detected how cool Photomerge (a Photoshop extension) really is. It is the best panorama merge I ever used. It is vey simple to use and gives very good results.

What I learnt:

always use manual exposure

in case of 360° panoramas, photoshop tends to hang … I gues it is 360° sounds like an endless loop when selecting the pictures

be sure to taken enough pictures such that you have enough space at the borders

This is the “Porsche Museum” in Stuttgart, currently under construction. The picture is made of 15 images taken with focal length 22mm. Even if there are many details, you cannot see that it is stiched. Note that a person passed by. He is now four times on the pic.

This beautiful tree is stitched of 20 images. I was standing about 5 meters in front of this 10-15 m tree. It is really amazing how precisely the image is stitched.

After having used Adobe Lightroom for three weeks now, I find it a good approach but still not mature with respect of features. There are some desires which I collect here and post to the Adobe forum from time to time. My major issue is, how to migrate my data from IMatch or even let IMatch and Lightroom coexist.

The main reasons for me to switch to Lightroom are:

Close integration of development and Digital Asset Management (DAM)

My switch to Mac

My main issues are (with respect to Digital Asset Management)

In Lightroom I never know where I am:

It should clearly indicate which catalog is currently open

It should clearly indeate the path to the image

It should show the size of the image

Lightroom should be able to handle many images (lets say 200 000) with a reasonable performance

Lightroom should start Photoshop in the same way as Bridge deoes – passing the RAW file to PS

Lightroom should support more than one external application

Lightroom should support more formats for extenal applications, in particular be able to send the RAW file directly to the external application

Lightroom should provide a full API, not only for export but also for maintainance in the database including routines to specify a User Interface

Lightroom should provide the same metadata editor as it is in Bridge or Photoshop

Lightroom should show in which collection a particular image is?

Lightroom should be able to do all file based operations (like rename …) directly without pointing to the Finder

Lightroom should support more or less any file format, even non image formats (eg. GPX, MP3) thus allowing data of entire projects being collected

Lightroom should prvide dynamic collections / intelligent folders / predefined queries however one might call it

Lightroom should support time machine

Lightroom should support spotlight

… there is likely more to come
